Before we can do anything else in the life of our churches or communities, we have to ensure, to the best of our ability, that we are keeping people safe. That’s a responsibility for all of us, and all of us need to feel and actually be safe to follow our faith without fear of abuse or harm. We need to take extra care to ensure that those who are most vulnerable are safe to flourish and thrive. The Church of England hasn’t always got that right in the past, and so we are now rightly emphasising safeguarding in every aspect of our mission and ministry.

Safeguarding training is one of the ways we can ensure we learn the lessons from our failures in the past and instigate the very best practice in every area of church life now. This training ensures we know how to create an environment and culture of safety for every member of our community, recruit people to paid and voluntary roles in church life and mission safely and spot the signs of abuse going on outside of the church environment.

Much of this training can be undertaken online in the comfort of your own home with courses from the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team. More specialised training for people in leadership positions, or overseeing safeguarding in parishes is conducted in person and is delivered by our own diocesan safeguarding team.
